About

Balgay Children’s Society is a Charitable Trust based in Dundee. Through its work the Trust aims to promote the sound education and advancement in life of such disadvantaged children and young people. To achieve this Balgay Children’s Society awards grants, generally up to £5,000, to individuals and organisations within the Dundee City local authority area. The Trust meets twice a year in June and December to make decisions on the distribution of its funds.

History

The Society initially carried out its purpose through the operation of (what was latterly known as) Parkview School, Blackness Road, Dundee which was bequeathed by the Society by the Trustees of Harry Warren Scott in 1893.  The Society was originally called The Dundee Industrial Schools society and has undergone several name changes over the years with the final change to the current name of Balgay Children's Trust in 1984.

Who can apply?

The Trust accepts applications from individuals and organisations that are based in or carry out work in Dundee whose work falls under its priority areas. The Trust, on occasion, will enter into arrangements to provide multi-year awards, generally over the course of 3 years.

The Youth Philanthropy Initiative

Alongside its grant-giving activities, Balgay Children’s Society works with The Wood Foundation as a local partner in their programme, The Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI).  YPI is the biggest independent initiative being delivered in Scottish education. Each school is responsible for directing a grant of £3000 to a local charity championed by its students through a unique programme of teamwork, research, and competition. As a partner, Balgay Children’s Society awards smaller grants to the cause of YPI teams in Dundee schools that haven’t won the competition overall but still impress the judging panel.
